RE:UP 16 on Newsstands Now

In this issue, RE:UP goes inside the mind of the late journalist Hunter S. Thompson by way of an exclusive interview with Alex Gibney—who directed this year’s Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson—and a humorous Q&A with infamous Gonzo illustrator Ralph Steadman. Street art philanthropist Aaron Rose looks back on his Beautiful Losers art project—a gallery showcase featuring Shepard Fairey, Thomas Campbell, Stephen Powers (a.k.a. Espo), Margaret Killigan, Barry McGee (a.k.a. Twist), and Harmony Korine (screenwriter of Kids, director of Gummo)—as it was realized into an award winning documentary. Closing out the D.I.Y. film trinity for this issue are striking images of booming sound systems perched atop BMX bikes made by dudes from Trinidad from the movie Made In Queens.

The music coverage in #16 has profiles on the most relevant artists killing it in the genres of: bass-heavy beats (Warp’s Flying Lotus), Swedish hip-hop and sequel to Santogold (Mapei), electrohouse (Germany’s Booka Shade), basement 8-bit thrash (Crystal Castles), and casio Afrobeat (Antibalas guitarist Chico Mann).

Delving into travel, RE:UP takes a summer mecca to the Middle East told by a collage of iconic Polaroids, and takes you in for an overnight stay at Portland, Orgeon’s Bohemia-tique Ace Hotel. RE:UP’s unique fashion spread “For the Ages” proves that it doesn’t matter when you’re from, just where you’re at.

Since its first publication, the Middle Signature design section—featuring original pieces of work from the most beloved contemporary artists—has become a staple of RE:UP. This issue marks the first induction into RE:UP’s Middle Signature Hall of Fame, with designers Parra, FriendsWithYou, Huntergatherer, Kelsey Brookes and more getting the nod. And when they weren’t screenprinting concert poster art for Gang of Four, VHS or Beta, Guided By Voices, or Cat Power, the couple from Milwaukee known as The Little Friends of Printmaking designed the cover of this issue, complete with an accompanying foldout poster.

DJ Small Change’s Big Cover-Up column features Sharpshooter cratedigger extraordinaire DJ Sureshot as he gives us a glimpse of his secret vinyl nuggets. Plus more Baby’s First Thrash Bands (Kim Ann from Hercules & Love Affair, and singer-songwriter José González), the Manual #12 Rewwwind (with a hilarious retrospective of The White Rapper Show by ego trip’s Sacha Jenkins and Brent Rollins), peculiar vinyl album cover art collected by Biggabush, and reviews on all the music, movies, gear, video games and books that you need to know about.

Go buy the issue before they're gone, or download the issue for free here.

New CSS Video, “Rat is Dead”

The five member Brazilian art-music collective CSS is back with their sophomore release, Donkey. Album drops July 22nd on Sub Pop, and we just received this promo video for their first single, "Rat is Dead." Anyone familiar with the preceding Cansei Der Se Sexy LP will immediately note the shift toward, um, we’ll call it musical maturity for now — less on the electro party do-as-you-please style, more on the vocally structured, new wave-sounding, “my name is Lovefoxxx and, yes, I actually sing tip.” But until we hear the entire album, whether or not the new CSS is a better CSS remains open to debate. Though Lovefoxxx is looking as cute and fashionably eccentric as usual, donning a glimmering white one-piece with some type of tutu fabric for the shoulders a la boa style, topped off with a waist length tassel or two down the chest. Gotta give her points for that.

The Cool Kids: That's Stupid! (The Mixtape)

Run DMC, Beastie Boys, a taste of Too $hort for some of them playa points -- Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish, aka The Cool Kids duo, are indeed pushing that late 80s, sweet bass rumping, 808 sound. With slots on both Lollapalooza and Rock the Bells stages this summer, and hot off the heels of their debut The Bake Sale EP, the Cool Kids continue to clamber on up the music chain. On That's Stupid!, with homage to Sir Mix-A-Lot's "My Posse on Broadway" and Eric B & Rakim's "Paid in Full" it's time to rattle that trunk, put them windows down and lay back that seat, cuz' main street with the Cool Kids be calling.

Download: The Cool Kids, That's Stupid!, (The Mixtape)

Directions from Mikey and Chuck, via their myspace:

“1. Play this in your car first!

2. Don’t skip.. it’s only 25 minutes.. (shit is Epic)”

Japanese woman caught living in man's closet

A homeless woman who sneaked into a man's house and lived undetected in his closet for a year was arrested in Japan after he became suspicious when food mysteriously began disappearing.

Police found the 58-year-old woman Thursday hiding in the top compartment of the man's closet and arrested her for trespassing, police spokesman Hiroki Itakura from southern Kasuya town said Friday.

The resident of the home installed security cameras that transmitted images to his mobile phone after becoming puzzled by food disappearing from his kitchen over the past several months.

One of the cameras captured someone moving inside his home Thursday after he had left, and he called police believing it was a burglar. However, when they arrived they found the door locked and all windows closed.

"We searched the house ... checking everywhere someone could possibly hide," Itakura said. "When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side."

The woman told police she had no place to live and first sneaked into the man's house about a year ago when he left it unlocked.

She had moved a mattress into the small closet space and even took showers, Itakura said, calling the woman "neat and clean."

Looking for Suzanne

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.
And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

Says my friend Colin Whyte of Leonard Cohen, "Most of his stuff is tough to access but then he can drop suzanne and just crush any pop writer working in the last 20 years."

Aussies = Life of Leisure

A few days ago, my friend Peppa popped up out of nowhere on my IM and dropped this photo on me. She's Australian and I'm fairly certain all Aussies are born with some sort of travel gene, because most of the ones I know make a life of cruising the world. In Peppa's case, looking for good surf. I think she took this in Indo, but sent it to me from Bali. Must be nice.

RE:UP 15 Seattle Jumpy

This one is just around the corner... And if Pretty Titty is known for getting loose at his regular Sing Sing events, who knows what storm he'll bring for his B-Day celly. Plus Stretch Armstrong is gonna be in the house, hot off his gig for the new Diesel flagship store opening next week in Hong Kong.

The Royal Rumble Gang

Am I feeling these trendy L.A. New Wave disco scenesters right now? Yes... afraid so.

Check out their latest mini-mix (#5), available for download off their Myspace. And props to Russ, who is definitely the dude.

Getting Ohhh So Cool with Crystal Castles

So I'm on a blog-rummaging rampage right now and just came across this photo from a Crystal Castles show a few weeks ago. When I noticed--shiiit--there I am in the corner getting wild on the photo tip. You can check my post from this night here.

Nipple City

Sometimes I just can't help myself. A bit of a problem, really. But REALLY all that makeup and just the general vibe of this photo is killing me -- to the point I don't actually like it. Not a bit.

But still, damn!

Thanks to Mel D for bringing this one to my attention.

Kid Sister in W Magazine

We all know that Kid Sister is on her way to greatness, that her brother is Josh from Flosstradomus, that her boy toy is none other than A-Trak, and of course, Kanye has brought her into his golden fold. But what I didn't know was how fashionably informed the 27-year-old was. Just check this excerpt from a profile of her in W:

"Though Young claims to be a fashion neophyte, there’s plenty of evidence to the contrary. She made her TRL debut in a purple Hussein Chalayan dress and Valentino slingbacks, and her requests for this photo shoot read like a veteran fashionista’s wish list, straight from the spring runways: “Clothing: Dior, Hussein Chalayan, Alexander Wang, Topshop stuff (not Kate Moss’s line), Etro, Chloé (footwear and clothing), Balenciaga (knee-high gladiator sandals in black and white), Gracie by Alice McCall (Australian designer), Miu Miu.... Shoes: Christian Louboutin, Chloé, Pierre Hardy, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent star heels.”"

Damn. And she calls herself a neophyte?

Ed Templeton Solo Exhibition

Skater, photographer, Toy Machine founder, Vegan, featured artist of the upcoming Beautiful Losers movie -- Ed Templeton is a creative multi-tasker, and is having his second solo exhibition at the Nils Staerk Gallery in Copenhagen, opening tonight. Ed has been in town downing Carlsberg with the Danes and preparing for the show for the last month with his wife Deanna (the nude below and one of the pieces that will be on display).

If you're in the Denmark area, or will be sometime this next month, the exhibit runs through June 28.

R.I.P. Mass Appeal

As reported by Gawker: Adrian Moeller, publisher of Mass Appeal magazine, emails us to confirm that the hip hop lifestyle mag is in fact shutting down, as we reported yesterday: “After 12 years of publishing Mass Appeal Magazine we’ve decided to call it quits on the print edition,” he writes “We’re putting our resources into our faster growing properties, Missbehave Magazine and Colossal Media. We’re in talks to sell Mass Appeal, and it may resume publishing in the future. We’ll continue the website and special event productions.” So, not as bad as a sharp stick in the eye.

Pour One Out For Robert Rauschenberg

His work is a part of art history curriculum, he questioned everything, broke all the rules, drank like a fish, spoke with a heavy Southern drawl and ran with the likes of de Kooning, Jasper Johns, and Jackson Pollock. One of the most recognizable figures in 20th century postwar modernism died today at 82, and the art world is paying their respects. He pushed the limits of Abstract Expressionism, the cool guy art of the 1950s and helped develop the philosophy of pop art, conceptualism, and process art. Rauschenberg was first noticed for his “combine” art–the combination of paint and sculpture–but later moved into several different mediums and experimental styles. For a comprehensive obituary, head over to The New York Times.

The Sartorial Selecta

One of my favorite columns, which happens to appear in GQ, is by longtime fashion observer Scott Schuman. He gives men advice on how to dress, how to behave, and generally anything related to taste, comportment and style. He doesn't delve into unfamiliar territory, but keeps his focus on the classic and long standing traditions of proper dress. Reading Schuman is like picking up an etiquette book from the 50s. He preaches sartorial convention that has endured through cultural fads and fleeting trends. Knowing this and understanding where Schuman is coming from, it's easy to appreciate his keen and refined eye. And there's something very real and accessible about his writing. It's authoritative and convincing without coming across as pretentious or condescending -- and when it comes to something as arbitrary and debatable as fashion, this is no small achievement. Anyway, I was surfing the web looking for some coverage of Australian Fashion Week, which just ended today. But when I came across The Sartorialist blog I hardly remembered what I was looking for in the first place. And yes, that's Wes Anderson in the corduroy. Although before my distraction, I did find this great suit by James Cameron from his show today in Sydney. When appropriate, I'm a big fan of no socks with suits (final image).
